The Trans-Tasman IP Attorneys Board (TTIPAB) warns of scammers impersonating registered IP attorneys to defraud IP rights owners. These scammers use real attorney details to make fake communications appear credible, pressuring victims to file trademarks or make payments.
Signs of a Scam:
-
Urgent requests or threats.
-
Slightly altered email domains (e.g., “@ip-firm-aus.com”).
-
Unfamiliar payment requests or methods.
-
Poorly formatted letterheads or email signatures.
What to Do:
-
Verify sender details through official channels.
-
Contact your attorney directly via their listed phone number.
-
Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments.
If scammed, notify IP Australia’s fraud team and your bank immediately. Businesses should educate staff to spot suspicious emails, as these scams can target all types of IP rights. Stay vigilant to protect your assets.
